Exciting Updates & Growing Support
Does it ever seem to you like nothing is happening and then EVERYTHING is happening?
Well THAT just happened here at Doc’s Cancer Research Fund.
The Wayzata, MN High School Girls Soccer Teams held a cancer fundraiser scrimmage to benefit Dr. Leonard’s Cancer Research Fund and raised $7582!
100% of those funds have already been contributed to the lab, where it is being used TODAY, to advance the cutting edge discoveries of the lab’s potentially lifesaving cancer research, and to provide answers to the treatment of this disease that affects us all.
The MPX Group in Golden Valley, MN recently donated $375 for their Spreading the Goodness at the MPX Group campaign. Funds were raised by MPX employees donating and purchasing used goods from each other, with proceeds going to the employees’ favorite non-profits.
The 19th Annual Brian Kraft Memorial 5K run was held on Memorial Day in Minneapolis, MN, and donates the proceeds from the run to Dr. Leonard’s Cancer Research Fund each year. This year, $1,901 was raised and contributed. Brian Kraft was a talented runner attributed his strength in his fight against cancer to his love of running and to the work of his long-time friend, Dr. Arny Leonard.
The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity at the University of Minnesota hosted their 4th Annual Pumpkin Carve Against Cancer to raise cancer research dollars and they chose Dr. Leonard’s Cancer Research Fund to be the receipt of the funds raised from the sale of over 200 pumpkins to be carved! Way to go Phi Kappa Psi!
These smaller fundraisers are so important for spreading the word about the work being done in the lab, and for giving Dr. Leonard a chance to meet the people that care about this work, and also to hear their stories. The 17-year-old Wayzata student who is now cancer free, the fraternity student who’s brother is battling cancer as we speak, the Minnesota Vikings player whose Mom is being treated for breast cancer, the runner whose buddy was taken by cancer at such a young age; and it reminds us why we are passionate about raising funds that turn cancer research into cancer cures.
And there is more! We have several marketing people from St. Kate's MBA program who have been very generously volunteering their time and expertise to update the cancer fund's website and print materials. They are amazing at what they do and their donation of time and talent are very much appreciated.
All this and we are in full swing preparing for OUR next fundraiser scheduled for March 14th, 2017 at Minnesota Horse & Hunt Club. We are reaching out NOW for Corporate Sponsorships, Donations, In-Kind Donations and Registrations. Get your registration in before January 1st for a $50 discount!
During this season of giving we are asking for your support by making a year-end contribution to fund cancer research. 100% of your year-end contributions to Dr. Leonard’s Cancer Research Fund go directly to support the Saltzman Lab and contributions are 100% tax deductible.
Your past donations have allowed the lab to:
develop with genetic engineering, an immune response to reduce tumor volume without toxicity
identify genes that work against the immune system and make antibodies against them
create an experimental model that is akin to the human growth of tumors, so that experiments going forward are more efficient because of their similarity to human cancer development
demonstrate that the use of a reduced amount of chemotherapy in conjunction the genetic engineering construct decreases the toxicity of the chemotherapy while still providing as much of the killing power.
We are very excited about these discoveries, and funds are needed to continue this important work. With changes in the charitable giving laws and regulations, you have the opportunity to make a greater impact by donating appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. The gift is deductible at the stock’s current fair market value.
If you’re 70 1/2 or older, the now-permanent IRA Charitable Rollover law allows you to give up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to charity without paying federal income tax on the withdrawal.
Dr. Leonard is passing along a big congratulations to YOU, because you are the people getting this done. Cancer cures happen because of cancer research, and the lab could not move forward without your contributions. We are thankful for your consideration and hope that we are one of your charities of choice. We are making every dollar count. Thank you so much.
